Maytag Recalls 1.7 Million Dishwashers Because of Fire Hazard

Maytag is recalling 1.7 million dishwashers because an electrical failure creates a fire hazard. The company has received 12 reports of dishwasher heating element failures that resulted in fires and dishwasher damage, including one report of extensive kitchen damage from a fire. No injuries have been reported, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recall includes the Maytag brand as well as Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley—all with plastic tubs. They were sold over the past four years at department and appliance stores and by home builders for between $250 and $900.

Finding out if your dishwasher is included in the recall can be a bit tricky. The recall notice lists numerous serial numbers. To find yours, look on the label located inside the plastic tub on a tag near the left side of the door opening.

Consumers should stop using the recalled dishwashers and disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker. Owners of the affected machines can either schedule a free in-home repair or receive a rebate following the purchase of certain new Maytag brand stainless-steel tub dishwashers. The rebates are $150 or $250 depending on which model you buy. Consumers should not return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where purchased as retailers are not prepared to take the units back.

To see if your dishwasher is included in the recall or for more information, call Maytag at (800) 544-5513 or visit the firm’s website at www.repair.maytag.com.
